Understanding Sexual Compulsive Behavior
Sex addiction — also referred to as sexual compulsive behavior — is a progressive behavioral pattern marked by repetitive sexual behaviors that feel difficult to control despite negative consequences.
What may begin as coping, escape, or stimulation can gradually become compulsive, secretive, and driven by shame.
From a clinical perspective, this is not simply about sex. The behavior often functions as a way to regulate anxiety, loneliness, stress, or emotional pain. Over time, the cycle can intensify — leading to secrecy, broken agreements, guilt, and emotional disconnection.
Within relationships, compulsive behavior can erode trust and create deep relational injury.
A Holistic and Relational Approach
My approach is psychological, relational, and holistic.
Rather than focusing only on the behavior, we explore the underlying drivers, including:
- Attachment wounds
- Trauma history
- Emotional regulation patterns
- Relational dynamics
For individuals, our work centers on increasing awareness, strengthening responsibility and integrity, and realigning behavior with core values.
For couples, treatment includes structured support for rebuilding trust and repairing betrayal trauma.
A Space for Insight and Change
This is not a space for judgment. It is a space for insight, healing, and meaningful change.
When clinically appropriate, I collaborate with my consulting addiction psychiatrist, Dr. Claudia Patricia Rodriguez, to ensure comprehensive care when psychiatric support is needed.
